Bad News Barrett illustration

I've been dabbling with Live Trace a little more to get a sharper finish to my illustrations, as I was getting annoyed by the jagged lines caused by the paper grain when scanning a pen-drawn piece at high resolution. I'm obsessed with WWE so thought this would be a good way to go and experiment with a completely different feel to my usual pencil-laden work.

Maths-teaching Robots!

This is a series of Robots I designed and illustrated for a company which used exercise to teach mathematics. Each character deals with a discipline within maths, for example the Data Handling Robot, which uses his keen eye to analyse data like a detective.

Cat Spread

Here is a playful spread I produced for an as-yet unwritten cat story aimed at 5-8 years. Again playing with type to show how a story can meander along in a more fun way, whilst drawing more cats!

Children's book spreads for Piano & the Boy

Here are some re-laid picture book spreads from a story I wrote titled Piano & the Boy. I have paid a lot more attention to the typography as this plays a massive factor in the delivery of a story. The images are dense, lush and still so the typography introduces an extra dimension of energy to the spread

Ancient Egypt educational resources for children

This is a set of educational work I was commissioned to design and illustrate for Key Stage 2 pupils. It taught fact form Ancient Egypt in a fun and colourful way, featuring many activities to complete!

Lego Portal App Branding and Concept

This is a proposal for a Lego app for children. It takes the physical lego bricks we know and love and scans them into a virtual world where challenges and tasks are undertaken. Instead of the construction being the main selling point of  Lego set, with my proposal it is only the beginning. 

Yorks Art Exhibition Flyer!

I took a typographical approach to this poster to show the eclectic nature of the works shared across the walls of Yorks. I also toned down the black logo to a softer grey and this ended up deciding my colour scheme or grey and yellow.

'To Forgive' Illustration

Here is my completed illustration for a zine project in homage to Smashing Pumpkins. I chose to illustrate an image based on the song To Forgive and I have been wanting to try out some pen illustration with a vintage, art nouveau feel.

Mia portrait completed

Pencil and charcoal portrait of a model named Mia. I have only had a couple of attempts at photorealism and I have a lot to work on, improving contrast, achieving full photo-realistic hair. I am really happy with elements in the face though, freckles, eyes and skin all look solid enough!

Progress on the portrait. I have 2 and a half weeks left to begin my own self-portrait for the Sky Arts May 2nd deadline.

Here is the beginning of a portrait I am producing as a kind of practice for a self portrait I will begin soon, for the Sky Arts Portrait of the Year competition. I haven't attempted photo-realism since my foundation course seven years ago, I'm hoping my eye for detail has remained sharp since then, looking promising so far...

Fashion Illustration

Here is the beginning of a project I will be finalising in the coming weeks. A project proposed to me by flourishing photographer Jenni Byron, I will base my ideas on her work and develop the source imagery into a fashion illustration. Above is a taster!

Laura Marling 'The Beast' illustration

Here is my entry for the Laura Marling vinyl design competition! The piece of text that accompanies it:

My vision portrays Marling metaphorically dancing with the devil. She is immersed, overwhelmed, burdened under its weight, and in doing so has become 'The Beast'.
The depiction of the beast is influenced by Native American headdress along with the unforgiving, visceral beasts of nature which have now become her crown.

I Am My Hair tattoo

Here is the coloured and polished final version of the tattoo I have illustrated. Watch this space for future updates when it is transferred into the real thing!

Moon Princess

This week, along with promoting the Laura Marling illustration and awaiting results of the Stoker competition, I will be producing the final illustrations for Moon Princess, referring to the design I have digitally produced.

This is a project I have been working on for a theatre. It is a production based on the story by Fumiko Miyachi and will predominantly depict the Princess lush with Japanese licks.

Quickly following up the Stoker competition I have just completed my 2nd competition entry of 2013, a Secret 7" design for Laura Marling's The Beast. This is only a window into the illustration which will be fully revealed very soon! 

As a winner of the Florence + the Machine Secret 7" competition and Ladyhawke last year, I would love to complete the trilogy of awesome artists that I have produced record sleeves for!

Stoker Update

The voting for the Stoker Movie Postcard competition has finished. 195 votes put me in 4th place and the judges panel will reveal the final results this Friday 15th February- FIVE overall winner will be selected. Watch this space :)
